Funding and timeline for the VERIFOR project

VERIFOR Funders
The VERIFOR project costs €2.4 million,
over four years (2005-9). The main funder for the project is the European Union, which is covering 80% of the costs
from its ‘Tropical Forestry Budget Line’. The Government of Netherlands covers the
remaining 20% and the Government of Germany
contributes to the Latin America programme.
Through the dissemination of research findings and advisory services, VERIFOR will contribute to the EU FLEGT Action Plan by helping the EU's southern partner countries verify that their timber has been legally harvested.
Timeline
VERIFOR activities are split into two distinct phases:
- Phase 1 (the research phase) leads to an international experts' meeting and series of regional workshops (in 2006) to review and build upon existing verification systems, both within the sector and beyond.
- During Phase 2 (advisory and knowledge sharing), VERIFOR team members will contribute to international learning on verification system design, and build a dialogue with interested parties to design and refine national verification systems that are attuned to country realities and enjoy broad national ownership. This will culminate in a major international conference, scheduled for 2009.
The image below gives an outline of the types of activities being undertaken in each phase, and some of the key outputs from the project over the four years in which it is funded.
