On 27-28 April 2006, VERIFOR held an experts consultation meeting in Palma de Mallorca Spain. Verification and forestry professionals from fifteen countries were invited to discuss the principles emerging from Phase I's case study research.
The workshop aimed to help identify principles for effective verification practice
that are equitable (socially just/not damaging to the poor) and developmentally sound'. The meeting was structured around four themes: ownership, independence, legality standards and developmental impacts of verification. Each theme was presented by a VERIFOR team member, and discussed in group and plenary sessions.
Case study presentations from British Columbia, Ecuador, Ghana, Malaysia and Cameroon were used to illustrate the themes. One participant also gave a guest presentation on social issues relating to verification. The last session took the form of a regional panel discussion, in which participants from Africa, Asia and Latin America were invited to present the key issues and challenges relating to verification in their regions.
